New Orchard Trees

October 15th, 2009

Our favorite mainland tree supplier has announced two new varieties of low chill cherries. We hope to get several of each variety and try them out at Hillside Farm.

At the moment our orchard is primarily in citrus and other tropical fruit trees. Which grow well in our location and all, however, when our trees fruit, so do everyone else's. By bringing in a variety of fruit tree which normally is only represented in the groceries and farmer's markets by shipped in fruit, we hope to be able to provide the folks in Hawaii with a sustainable option to flown in fruit. We also hope to be able to provide something that not everyone has an abundance of at the same time we do. After all, we are supposed to be farming for a profit and not just for fun and enjoyment.

The two varieties are both red cherries and they are supposed to be able to produce with less than 300 chill hours so we are hopeful of a crop being produced. So far all the trees we have planted from this supplier have out performed any which we have acquired from any local sources. Perhaps because the trees are flown in by air instead of shipped in a large container, but for whatever reason, the ones from Bay Laurel Nurseries are excellent trees. Bay Laurel Nursery
