Baby Bunnies! Finally!
Earlier this year, the whole herd got a set of penicillin shots for possible vent disease. We'd not been having any baby bunnies and that seemed a likely reason why not once all other easier reasons were crossed off the list. So, after five weeks of a weekly shot for every bunny in the herd (that's over 100 shots!) there are now have baby bunnies again! Yay!
Black Vienna Marked baby bunny
Blue Tortoiseshell baby bunny
There are only two in the litter, but they are nice and well fed.
The little black one has a lovely density of color, however, there is also a Vienna Mark. That's the white dot on the head that you see in the picture. Which is a disqualification on the show table, so this little baby isn't a show bunny just because of 'the dot'. Arrgh! Also, because of that dot, there will be a "VC" as part of the bunnie's name and the sibling will have "PVC" as part of the name. The "VC" stands for Vienna Carrier (although with the white mark, that's kinda redundant) and the "PVC" stands for "Possible Vienna Carrier" because even though we don't see any white marks, it could still carry the Vienna gene.
Haven't a clue what name theme we will be using this year, once we figure that out as well as have a clue as to the gender, then we will consider names. It's also a bit early yet, since lots of things can happen to baby bunnies when they are this small. I'll not officially believe they are here until they are about ten days old. It's pretty rare for one that's ten days to two weeks old to not survive, but anybunny less than a week old is so very delicate that I worry they will survive. Usually it's a needless worry, but they are still really delicate at this stage so they won't be named for awhile yet.
Hillside Ziggy Stardust VC, the new mum
Hillside Sydney, the new dad
The parents of the two new baby bunnies are Hillside Ziggy Stardust VC and Hillside Sydney. This is Ziggy's first litter, although Syd has had offspring before.
Ziggy built a nice nest with lots of wool in it. She then had her babies in the nest which is not as frequent as you might think would happen. She's also been feeding them properly, so Ziggy is a great mom bun. Especially for her first litter. Too bad she's a Vienna Carrier. We'd not known if she was or wasn't, but what with the dot on the black one, she is. Hopefully the wool quality will be really great on these little ones. Not all bunnies need to be show bunnies, having bunnies making wool is probably more important in all actuality.
