Another fun date this month - 2/20/2020! Woot! And, we have three new baby bunnies to go along with the date! Yay!
That's Buttercup there with the 'grass moustache'. When a doe is getting ready to kindle (have a litter of babies) she will build a nest by gathering up grasses and pulling wool from her chest. It's generally the only time you will see a rabbit carrying grasses around. Usually, when it's tasty grasses, they just sit right there and munch them, no dragging the grasses off to eat somewhere else. I'd actually given her the grasses to eat, but she gathered them all up and tucked them into her nest box.
It's a small litter and there seems to be two pink ones and one brown one, although the pink ones will probably be white as adults. They could possibly become torts, that's possible. Mum bun, Buttercup, is a tort and dad bun is an albino so no really telling what color he is under that white wash. But, it's possible the babies could be torts once they get done being pink? The brown one almost looks like a chocolate tort, although, he could be a 'plain' chocolate, we will see in a couple more days.
Hopefully they will survive, baby bunnies are really very delicate at this stage. This is also Buttercup's first litter although she did build a nice nest and she had them in the nest. Well, two of them ewre in the nest. Ones of the white ones was out on the wire when I first found them. Still wiggling, though, so it was put back in the nest and seems to have survived. Then the chcolate one was found out of the nest. It's still wiggling and well after it's misadventure.
Now (providing these little ones survive, of course) will have to come up with a new name theme for this year. Great explorers, perhaps? The little ones do seem to be wandering about. Names of great winds, perhaps? It's been windy lately. Storms, perhaps, although one doesn't really want to think of these little fuzzy bunnies as storm clouds or anything? Hmm, the annual name theme quest! It seems to happen every year.
New baby bunnies for 2-20-2020 and also a general overall good bunny day.
Daisy, Sydney, Gayle and Hadrian all got haircuts today. Daisy is now visiting with Sydney and Gayle is now visiting with Hadrian. These pairings are age to youth since Daisy is young at 11 months and Sydney is an old bun at almost six years old. Daisy had a litter before, so she should know what to do. Gayle is an older bun at 3 years 3 months, although she's never had a litter before. Hadrian is a year and a half old so he's still a young buck. He's never had any offspring before, either, so this (if it happens) will be a first litter for both of them. Due on March 23rd, 2020.
Gayle is the black bunny and in her picture she had a little bit of her coat harvested so you can see the nice crimp structure she has to her wool. If I ever wanted to spin just her wool, it may even produce yarn with a tiny bit of bounce to it. Usually, angora is really soft, but it generally doesn't have a lot of crimp so it doesn't make stretchy yarn. That's why Hula Bunny yarn has some Merino sheep's wool added to it, the bouncy sheep's wool adds the crimp that angora wool usually doesn't have.
This is Daisy before her haircut, I didn't get any pictures of her afterwards since I forgot. It takes about forty five minutes to an hour to completely harvest the coat, trim the toe nails and inspect the bunny. They all had clean ears today with no ear mites although Gayle had a bit of dandruff, which is sometimes sorta a mite type of thing.
Daisy is a nice solid doe, nice wide nose, solid shoulders, good dense yet open coat, nice temperament. Hopefully she will be a good mum bun. Bred to Sydney, none of the babies will probably be white, but having Daisy as a mum, all of them (providing they appear, of course) will be able to have white offspring.
It was a good bunny day today, but tomorrow will probably be back to working on the restoration of the little house. I didn't even go over there today, just got as far as the bunnies and that was about it.
Instead of a new page, I'll add in new pictures of the baby bunnies here until I get organized enough to put the daily baby pictures onto a page of their own.
This is Day Two of the newest baby bunnies. Buttercup is doing really well for a first time mum. She's fed them until they are like little hippos, very fat and round. It's been cold and windy, well, as cold and windy as it gets around here but it being Hawaii and all, that's probably not quite the same cold and windy some places experience. But, it was a cold and windy night and the babies weathered it beautifully.
